An Overview of Hydraulic Pumps: Working, Types, and Applications

Hydraulic systems rely heavily on hydraulic pumps, which are useful for converting mechanical energy into hydraulic energy. They are at the core of many machines to provide the force needed to power movement and lift heavy loads. From construction equipment to industrial machinery, hydraulic pumps are widely used in a variety of sectors due to their efficiency and reliability.

Working of hydraulic pumps

Simply put, a hydraulic pump operates by creating a vacuum at its inlet. This allows atmospheric pressure to push hydraulic fluid (usually oil) from the reservoir into the pump. The pump then forces this fluid into the hydraulic system under high pressure. The pressurized fluid is then used to actuate cylinders, motors, or other hydraulic components.

Two stages of operation:

Suction: When the pump's internal components move, they create a low-pressure zone that draws fluid from the reservoir.

Discharge: As the components continue to move, they push the fluid through the pump outlet and into the hydraulic system.

Hydraulic pumps are called positive displacement pumps because they deliver a fixed amount of fluid with each cycle, ensuring consistent flow and pressure.

Different types of hydraulic pumps:

Gear pumps

Simple, durable, and inexpensive, these pumps operate using the meshing of gears to pump fluid by displacement. There are external and internal gear pumps.

Vane pumps

Vane pumps have blades or "vanes" that slide in and out of rotor slots, trapping and moving fluid.

Piston pumps

Piston pumps use reciprocating pistons to move fluid and can operate at very high pressures. There are axial and radial piston pumps.

Screw pumps

Screw pumps use two or more intermeshing screws to move fluid.

Applications:

Construction equipment, manufacturing and industrial machinery, automotive systems, agricultural equipment, aerospace, and marine and offshore industries are major users of hydraulic pumps.
